A Legacy Rooted in Sharpsburg

Robert L. Brown was a lifelong resident of Sharpsburg with deep generational ties to the town. His family owned and operated the Brown General Store on Main Street for 150 years, serving as a vital community hub.

In honor of this legacy, Robert entrusted his estate to Blue Grass Community Foundation to create the Robert L. Brown Foundation. Today, the Foundation carries forward his vision: a vibrant, welcoming Sharpsburg with strong community connections, lively public spaces, and meaningful opportunities to gather, celebrate and grow, together.

We are committed to investing in Sharpsburg’s future through community development, arts and cultural programming, and partnerships that enrich life for residents of all ages.

A new downtown playground
Community center renovations
Free art classes, movie nights and summer youth programs

Sharpsburg’s First Permanent Public Art Installation

It’s here! Sharpsburg’s first permanent public art installation is now complete. Designed and installed by Prometheus Art, this striking shade structure features three sculpted tobacco leaves inspired by the town’s agricultural history.

This project reflects the vision of the Robert L. Brown Foundation at BGCF and the love Mr. Brown had for his hometown. It also shows what legacy gifts can do: create meaningful spaces, strengthen community pride and leave something lasting for future generations to enjoy.

The brief ceremony will feature reflections on Robert L. Brown and the Foundation, Sharpsburg’s heritage, the creation of the sculpture and a proclamation recognizing September 19 as Robert L. Brown Foundation Day in Kentucky.

Following the dedication, guests are invited to remain for a time capsule burial, light refreshments and fellowship.
